In 1987 the Hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark. It cost $250,000 to build, and many considered it the most elegant hotel west of the Mississippi River. The hotel was built from local limestone and Oregon pine. El Tovar was one of a chain of hotels and restaurants owned and operated by the Fred Harvey Company in conjunction with the Santa Fe Railway. This was done in an effort to appeal to the tastes of the elite from that era, who at the time considered European culture the epitome of refinement. The Chicago architect envisioned the hotel as a cross between a Swiss chalet and a Norwegian Villa. The hotel was designed by Charles Whittlesey, Chief Architect for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. This celebrated historic hotel located directly on the rim of the Grand Canyon first opened its doors in 1905. I would have loved to try one of their desserts, but I was way too full. The steak was perfectly cooked to my request, and was topped with a buttery, garlic sauce. In reality, if my wife had been with me we could have split the entire meal. I typically order 6-8oz, and this steak took up about half of the plate. When the plates came, I was a little surprised at the size of the steak. So, we decided to avoid ordering any appetizers, but they do seem to have a nice selection of them. It is 14oz, and comes with either fries or a baked potato, a vegetable, and a salad. We did glance at the menu, but it had already been recommended that we try the Delmonico steak, so that is what we both ordered. We had mentioned going to another steakhouse, and one of the local associates said we should not go there, but rather down the street to the Log Cabin Inn.
